Frequently Asked Questions from 2021/2022 NFBC Indian Country Roundtables
In late 2021 through the end of 2022, members of the Native Farm Bill Coalition (NFBC) traveled across the United States to facilitate roundtables and meet with Tribal leaders, agriculture producers, and nutrition experts ahead of the renewal of the Farm Bill. As the NFBC’s research partner, the Indigenous Food and Agriculture Initiative had the opportunity to gather feedback on U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) programs that worked and did not work for Indian Country. IFAI and other NFBC partners included priorities from this outreach within the NFBC’s report Gaining Ground published in 2022.
Roundtable attendees’ questions and comments generally fell into two categories:
- those that we can respond to now with an answer or direction to a resource to help solve a current barrier;
- those that cannot be solved without a legislative or rule change.
IFAI has developed resources to inform on both. Click the buttons below for regional-based analysis, including snapshots of issues raised and resulting marker bills introduced in preparation for the next Farm Bill.
