The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is hosting a Tribal Call on June 24, 2024, beginning at 3 p.m. eastern, and invites elected Tribal officials and/or their designee’s to join the call. Read the Dear Tribal Leader Letter here.

According to the FDA, “The call will discuss the published final rule Standards for the Growing, Harvesting, Packing, and Holding of Produce for Human Consumption Relating to Agricultural Water issued by the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition.

“The final rule revises certain requirements in the Produce Safety Rule applicable to pre-harvest agricultural water for covered produce other than sprouts. The revised regulatory approach incorporates recent science, findings from investigations of several produce-related outbreaks, and information and feedback from a variety of stakeholders. These revisions to the produce safety regulation will more comprehensively address a known route of microbial contamination that can lead to preventable foodborne illness that is a significant public health problem.”

The Indigenous Food and Agriculture Initiative is working on Tribal Leader Briefing materials and will distribute those ahead of the call on this webpage, through our social media accounts, and via our newsletter. Check back regularly for updates.
